Our Staff
The uniqueness of West End Divers arises from its staff. This team of dedicated dive professionals ensures that you have a safe, fun and memorable vacation. Coming from all over the world, these individuals have their love of the water in common. Let them share with you their knowledge of Roatan’s reef — you will never want to leave!
Manager
Alex Rawson
Born in England and raised in Hong Kong, Alex experienced her first dive 9 years ago. Her love for marine creatures lead her to a whale shark conservation program in Mozambique in 2010. Realizing she was hooked on diving, she completed her Divemaster Course there also. Combining travel with marine conservation, Alex found herself in Roatan in 2011. With over 1000 dives worldwide, Alex has an amazing attitude towards diving as well as being “She Who Must Be Obeyed” here at the shop.
Instructors
Edwin Bush
Edwin is a native of Roatan and has been diving professionally since 2006. He began his career filming underwater videos at one of the large resorts on the island. After working for West End Divers for several months he joined our permanent staff in May of 2011. With a fluency in both Spanish and English, a strong and patient teaching style, over 1000 dives just on the Roatan Reef, and a great personality, we are pleased to have him as one of our instructors.
Krystal Enger
After growing up in the Southeastern US, our college gymnast, and latest addition to the Blondes spent 9 years in the corporate world as a para-legal, and Realtor in the Denver area. Packing up her puppy and leaving the winter in the Rockies, she is now living the life of luxury on the beach just outta town. With her infectious personality and upbeat outlook to diving and life in general, we are most pleased to have her on board as a Scuba Instructor and Dive Leader.
James Fisher
Growing up in England and Switzerland, being half a twin himself and in a household which included another pair, James managed to shake his duality a bit for education in Manchester. Diploma in hand, he moved into the financial industry of Europe for a year and a half before deciding that there is more to life than wearing a tie. Two years of travel brought him to Roatan for three days, a little under two years ago. Now a patient, accomplished and tie-less Dive Instructor, James is here to show you the better side of life, underwater.
Boat Captains
Our extremely competent Boat Captains bring decades of local knowledge and experience to the team at West End Divers. They are all divers, medically trained, and each is proud of their boats and the services they provide.
Samuel Matute
Sam was born on the mainland, but has old family roots on Roatan. A captain for thirteen years, Sam has been with West End Divers for over four years. Well qualified to operate any one of the four boats, Sam’s easy-going manner, capability, and dedication is unparalleled.
Angel Pena
A native Roatan, Angel has been piloting boats for the last seven years. Friendly and personable, it is Angel’s goal to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable diving experience. With a great smile, and an easy demeanor, Angel exudes the confidence and competence necessary to take you to any of the numerous dive sites on the island.
General Manager
Beast
Our four footed girl about the shop for the last couple of years, is here to make sure that Prime Directive (keeping food in her dish) is being followed. Shop cat by day, and about the town by night, you may find this feline catching a few winks on almost any stable surface. Sure, you can wake her, if you give her a scratchin’ between the ears.
The Rest of Us
John Hart
Originally from Northern California, John learned to dive in the Monterey Bay more than 30 years ago. After a stint in the Navy, he migrated to the Northwest where he began his diving career. John is a PADI Master Instructor with more than 5000 dives and 20 years of teaching experience. Although John is generally busy caring for and maintaining the equipment, he does most of the more technical instruction. He has been a D.O.T. hydrostatic tester for more than 18 years, was an IDC Staff Instructor, is a DSAT Gas Blender Instructor, and is certified to repair all major brands of scuba equipment.
Gary Carlson
“Bugs” is a former migrant industrial builder, machinist, and cold water diver. He arrived in Roatan in 2006, succumbing to his personal tropical epiphany. When you first contact West End Divers, Bugs is the one who will respond. He is also the guy who ensures that our boats are running smoothly and all the necessary dive shop machinery is operating as it should. In his spare time, you will also find Bugs out on the dive boat, with a particular keenness for technical diving.
