Answering the call of warmer climes, Andy showed up here at West End Divers a few years ago as a very pale Irish cop on holiday. Finding the life of a browned beach frolicker more to his liking, Andy worked his way up to Open Water Dive Instructor. After a brief year or so around the South Pacific, Australia, and Borneo for some outta town frolicking, he is back where it all started as Shop Manager, and Activities Coordinator. With over 1000 dives on this reef, Andy will pick the perfect site for you.
Courtney Blankenship - Scuba Instructor
Native Minnesotan, and hot dish aficionado, Courtney comes to us from her job at the aquarium on the sunny shores of the World Mall in Minneapolis. After obtaining a degree in Marine Vertebrate biology, and scuba certification in the Bahamas, she found her true calling, and has become one of our valued instructors. Courtney’s first loves are teaching Scuba diving, and showing her homies that pretty fishes don’t come from a shopping center.
Manon Aimard - Scuba Instructor
Raised in Marseille, Manon first learned to dive in Yongola Australia while on holiday four years ago. She moved on to Malaysia where she acquired her PADI Instructor Certification, and then to Sipadan to chase barracudas, and beach boys. Our favorite Osteopath is now a Roatan resident, and we are quite pleased to have her as part of the team. Do not forget to ask for her authentic French Toast recipe.
Maike ter Elst - Scuba Instructor
Maike comes to Roatan from the town of Venlo in the province of Limburg (not cheese), in the southeastern portion of The Netherlands, which is Holland, so she is Dutch. Sensibly she has pursued her Scuba life in warmer climes learning on Aruba, getting her Divemaster certification in Thailand, and becoming a PADI Scuba Instructor just down the street here on Roatan. Like all of us, she has fallen in love with our reef, and is ready to show you why.
Jose and Nelson - Boat Captains
The best boat captains on the island!
Coming from the mainland as kids, these thirty-something brothers have over 35 years combined experience as boat captains on this reef. Their knowledge of the reef, currents, channels, and dive sites is amazing. Trained in boat safety, and First Aid, as well as being divers themselves, you can rest assured that when you surface from your dive that they will be there waiting to help.
Darwing Reyes - Snorkel guide, and shop AB
Our buoyant snorkel guide, tank technician/filler, Able Body at the shop, and a man about town, Darwing is the most amazing eater! Seriously, like 6 meals a day while he is at the shop, and who knows what sort of masticating mayhem goes on at night. It can't be pretty.
Beast - General Manager
Our four footed girl about the shop for the last four years or so, is here to make sure that Prime Directive (keeping food in her dish) is being followed. Shop cat by day, and about the town by night, you may find this feline catching a few winks on almost any stable surface. Sure, you can wake her, if you give her a scratchin’ betwixt the ears.
John Hart Co-owner
Originally from Northern California, John learned to dive in the Monterey Bay more than 30 years ago. After a stint in the Navy, he migrated to the Northwest where he began his diving career. John is a PADI Master Instructor with more than 5000 dives and 20 years of teaching experience. Although John is generally busy caring for and maintaining the equipment, he does most of the more technical instruction. He has been a D.O.T. hydrostatic tester for more than 18 years, was an IDC Staff Instructor, is a DSAT Gas Blender Instructor, and is certified to repair all major brands of scuba equipment.
Gary Carlson Co-owner
Gary is a former migrant industrial builder, machinist, and cold water diver. He arrived in Roatan in 2006, succumbing to his personal tropical epiphany. The guy in front of the computer, he is usually in his office cube, but we let him out to dive once in awhile.
Janitor, custodian, and fix-it guy. Bugs could go far with the company if he would just learn how to paint.
